British Literature II - Final Exam British Literature is filled with diverse and talented writers who through each period has brought something new to the table. Over the course of the term we have covered the Romantic period, the Victorian Age and the Modern period. Each period has had a hand in developing literature through to the modern age and each writer has influenced the next generation. To best examine each period of literature the paper will be split amongst the three major periods the course has covered. Each period had it’s own style, stories and ways of telling each story as such the paper will explore the writers of each time and their effect on the later generations. Literature in general has grown from the impact the past generations have had on the current writers. Thus British literature in particular has developed over each period a great deal and has ultimately lead us into the modern twenty-first century literature that we read today. The Romantic period is a time where imagination and creat ivity in storytelling became key to the success of writers. Early authors of the time were radical in their writing and tended to be blunt when it came to social commentary of the industrial age and British rule as a whole. Later this would prove unwise and the idea of setting stories â€Å"long ago and far away† became popular. Romanticism was all about intense emotion and authenticity over realism. Iagos Manipulative Nature in Othello Iagos manipulative nature has a profound effect on the decisions made by other characters in Shakespeares ‘Othello’. Through his relations with those around him Shakespear characterizes him as a man full of malice, vengeance and dishonesty that is wholly inspired by jealousy. Furthermore it would appear that Iago has an exceptional ability to scheme, a talent which he uses to snake his way into the lives of others and exploit them through their weaknesses. Men On The Moon The Apollo Story Essay For years, man has looked up at the stars and wondered, what power they possessed or from what great God were they born? The answer to this question has always been a dream to man, but the dream is getting closer to reality. Space travel in the 1960s was become a reality, but man went farther with his expectations. Man now wanted to land and walk on the the only one of Earths natural satellites know as the Moon. The splashdown May 26, 1969, of Apollo 10 cleared the way for the first formal attempt at a manned lunar landing.1 The 363-foot-tall Apollo 11 space vehicle was launched from Pad A, Launch Complex 39, Kennedy Space Center, at 9:37 a. m., July 16, 1969. It was the United States first lunar landing mission. The launch vehicle, AS-506, was the sixth in the Apollo Saturn V series and was the fourth manned Saturn V vehicle. After a 2?-hour check-out period, the spacecraft was injected into the translunar phase of the mission.2 ? July 1996 marks the twenty-seventh anniversary of the epochal lunar landing of Apollo 11 in the summer of 1969. Although President John F. Kennedy had made a public commitment on 25 May 1961 to land an American on the Moon by the end of the decade, up until this time Apollo had been all promise. Now the realization was about to begin. Even though Kennedys political objectives were essentially achieved with the decision to go to the Moon, Project Apollo took on a life of its own over the years and left an important legacy to both the nation and the proponents of space exploration. Its success was enormously significant, coming at a time when American society was in crisis.?3 A unique confluence of political necessity, personal commitment and activism, scientific and technological ability, economic prosperity, and public mood made possible the 1961 decision to carry out an aggressive lunar landing program. It then fell to NASA, other organizations of the federal government, and the aerospace community to accomplish the task set out in a few short paragraphs by the president. By the time that the goal was accomplished in 1969, only a few of the key figures associated with the decision were still in leadership positions in the government. Kennedy fell victim to an assassins bullet in 1963, and science adviser Jerome B. Wiesner returned to MIT soon afterwards. Lyndon B. Johnson, of course, succeeded Kennedy as president but left office in January 1969 just a few months before the first landing. NASA Administrator James E. Webb resolutely guided NASA through most of the 1960s, but his image was tarnished by, among other things, a 1967 Apollo accident that killed three astronauts. He retired from office in October 1968. He is committed against the U.S, and will help almost anyone who is also against the U.S. He is very intelligent and crafty. In 1969 he led a coup against the Libyan government. He succeeded, and became head of state. He is a devoted Muslim. Qaddafi is a person to be read about and learned about. As I mentioned above, one of his greatest successes was leading a bloodless coup against the Libyan monarchy. He became head of state. He is still in power today. Another success is that fact that most Libyans lead good lives. All Libyans have a house or an apartment, a car, and most have televisions, phones, and recording equipment. The young people are well dressed and fed. He has survived many coup attempts against him. His face and picture are in most buildings in Libya. He always was devoted to school as a kid. He would take a long hike from the desert to school. He would come home only every Thursday, the beginning of the Muslim weekend. Then he would go back to school. He was the first in his family to be well educated. One of his first goals when he was a child was to join the Libyan army. He slowly moved up in rank. It was surprising they even let him in the army; he had a long police record. He eventually joined the King's police. This was when the idea of a coup attempt came. He did succeed. Qaddafi was born in a tent in the desert 20 miles south of the sea. This is a desolate place- burning hot in the summer, and freezing cold in the winter. Most people would consider this place to be uninhabitable. His father was at the bottom of social level in this very poor country. The name of tribe Qaddadfa means in Arabic, " Spitter or vomiter of blood." In Qaddafi's early years, in the 1940's there were tank battles in the desert and thousands of bombing raids by Germans in Libya. Besides this, in the 1920's the Italians under Mussolini had conquered Libya for the second time and had killed large numbers of women, children and old people. They trampled on copies of the Koran, threw men out of airplanes and raped and disembowelled women. So the Libyans of Qaddafi generation grew up full of hatred and misery. All this helps to explain his mental state. In 1970 Qaddafi and his foreign minister travelled to the Arab countries to try to get them to agree to attack Israel because he felt he was he was a real leader for all Arabs. He supported the use of terrorism. At that time he was friendly with the Egyptian leader Nasser, but after Nasser died the new Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat did not like Qaddafi and thought he was sick and possessed of the devil. When Qaddafi went to Egypt in 1973 he lectured the Egyptians that women should stay in the home and that everybody should behave like strict Muslims. The Egyptians didn't like this because they were more liberal. So the visit was a disaster. But Qaddafi really believed that the masses of Egyptian people were with him so he organized 20,000 Libyans to march to Cairo and he thought they would be joined by Egyptian people. The Egyptian government blocked all the roads between Libya and Egypt with railroad carriages, and allowed only a tiny group to go to Cairo. The same thing happened when Qaddafi went to Tunisia and spoke at a rally and told the people to unite with Libya. The president of Tunisia was listening at home on the radio and rushed to the rally, grabbed the micro phone, and "trashed" Qaddafi's unity idea, so to speak. These setbacks made him pull away from dealing with established governments and deciding to support revolutionaries including the IRA, and Black Power move- ments, and all Palestinian terrorists. In the beginning of his power, he used to drive around town in an old battered-up Volkswagen, and pick up groceries.
